Note: these are the most frequently asked questions by participants considering taking FS. If you are a leader offering FS or considering launching a FS ministry in your church or living room, please visit Leadership FAQ. Some questions may be answered on both lists of questions.
Freedom Session is for everybody, plain and simple.
FS is for people who hurt or sense something is missing in their lives. It’s for people who’ve been wounded in their childhood and/or their significant relationships. It’s for broken women and emotionally frozen men. It’s for victims of sexual abuse and for those struggling with a pornography/food addiction or any other destructive habit. It is for those who use alcohol and drugs to “feel better” or numb emotional pain. It is very effective for those planning to get married as well as those walking through a painful separation or divorce.
FS offers hope for those who live under a cloud of despair, for women who feel guilt for aborting a child. It’s for those who lack purpose and motivation in their lives, for perfectionists, people pleasers… Quite likely, FS is for you!
Freedom Session is equally effective for those without previous Christian experience and those who grew up in the church. Many long-time church attenders know a lot about God but find our experience with God and what we the Bible suggests our experience should be like are miles apart. This is one of the main reasons FS is popular in the church today!
Traditional 12 Step recovery programs ask you to turn your life and your will over to god ‘as you understand him to be,’ and refer to this god as a “Higher Power.” FS is based on a solid conviction that Jesus Christ IS God, the Highest Power and the only one who can heal our hearts, transform our lives and set us free from our unhealthy behaviors, bitterness or addictions. FS is much deeper than most 12 Step programs because FS is primarily focussed on healing the heart. Once this occurs, the unhealthy ways we once felt were necessary to escape pain or avoid conflict, are now reduced to a “bad choice” no longer needed.
FS also deals with softer core addictions that often work themselves into more complex addictions. These include: food addiction, love addictions, affirmation addictions, perfectionism, workaholism, TV, gaming and internet addictions. We believe we all have one or more “drugs of choice” we use to illegitimately escape pain or avoid conflict.
Homework is an essential and exciting aspect of Freedom Session and we have consistently found that the more you put into the 1-2 hour weekly Homework Assignment, the more life-change you will experience.
Both FS and Authentic Living offer practical LIFE SKILLS to help you deal with current pain and teach you how to personally communicate with God, to journal, break unholy sexual Soul Ties and resist temptation. One of your greatest moments of life-change will occur as you develop a person and detailed LIFE PLAN by which to pursue your priorities and values.
12 Step programs are for most commonly attended by people with addictions or compulsive behaviors. FS is for everyone!
There are three distinct versions of Freedom Session offered in North America:
Freedom Session looks slightly different in every setting but the three elements that typically occur in a Church or Home Group FS experience:
- Large Group Teaching where you gather together and listen to the teaching of FS author (via video). Follow along and take notes in your Participant Guide. (The Large Group Teaching is usually co-ed but can also be men or women only group.)
- The SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCE is strategically designed for you to interact with and explore how what you heard in the Large Group Teaching applies in your life. This is also the time to share what you are learning about yourself, God and your healing journey through the homework you did during the week. Lastly, you will have opportunity to share what is going on your life – the highs and the lows. Most Freedom Session ministries hold the small group meeting on the same night as large group teaching.
- ON YOUR OWN: Taking Steps towards Freedom is the weekly Homework Assignment, an essential part of Freedom Session that takes between 1-2 hours each week. As in most of life, the benefit you receive will be directly proportionate to the effort you invest. Give it your best shot. You and the people around you are worth it!
- A meal: eating together usually creates a sense of intimacy.
- Additional small group meetings set aside to more fully discuss the homework.
Yes. This is why we created the “My Personal Freedom Session.” However, to have the best possible FS experience, we still recommend you take the journey with others.
Freedom Session is a 20-week healing-discipleship journey with an optional 8-week follow course called Authentic Living.
Each “session” is 2 ¼ to 2½ hours long which includes a coffee/refreshment break and SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCE.
Most Freedom Session groups require a commitment from you to:
- purchase 2 Participant Guides (Facing the Truth and Finding Freedom). These are usually available through your FS Director or Facilitator.
- attend the full 20 weeks f FS, arriving on time with your weekly Homework Assignment completed.
- Some FS groups require a commitment up front to also take the 8-week follow up course called Authentic Living.
Yes. You can purchase a “Personal Workbook Set” and a video streaming subscription to watch some or all of the sessions on line.
The only way you could be assured of being in the same FS Small Group with your friends is to take FS in your Living Room.
If you have the privilege of taking FS in a church setting, your FS Director will place you in a group based on a number of factors (age, life stage, etc.) and the answers you provided on your FS registration form. It is to your best interest to be honest as you fill it out. FS is designed to help you on your healing journey, not nurture your best friendships.
Please trust the leadership of your FS ministry. They have your best interests at heart.
If you are considering offering FS in your Living Room, you may benefit from reading through the Leadership FAQ’s that answers this question in greater depth.
Freedom Session Small Groups typically range from 3 to 9 participants. There is no right or wrong but it helps when they are divisible by 3 to facilitate discussions in triads.
We encourage you to take Authentic Living. If your ministry location does not offer Authentic Living, you can order your own materials on-line.
After completing Authentic Living, we suggest interested Small Groups and/or Triads continue to meet for an additional three months for support and accountability. In January 2017 we will be publishing the Authentic Life Journal which will provide the needed guidance for Authentic Living Triads to meet and discuss how God is speaking to you, where you are struggling to live up to your Authentic Life Plan and what kind of support you need to continue your journey. Authentic Life Triads (or “quads”) are designed to be participant-led.
Then, leak out the freedom and healing you’ve experienced wherever you go. Get involved in your local church. Be the best employee or employer you can be. Impact your family, your marriage, your business and community with the authenticity you’ve discovered.
In the United States and Canada, You can purchase Freedom Session and Authentic Living materials in our on-line STORE with your credit or debit card. If you are taking FS at a local church or in someone’s living room, it is likely they have already purchased the participant guides and you can purchase from them and avoid shipping charges.
If you are purchasing your own resources on line, please visit our STORE for current prices.
Yes. We offer “bundle pricing” for the Participant Guides in quantities of 10, 25 and 50. For the individual purchasing his/her own Participant Guides, we also offer a FS “Personal Workbook Set” which will also save you money.
Freedom Session is designed and intended to be taken by adults, meaning those who have completed high school. At present, there is no FS Youth Edition.
The youngest FS grad we have personally seen is 17 and the oldest is 84.
