Ken has been a pastor for over 25 years and is the founder & Executive Director of Freedom Session International Ministries.
At 2AM, June 22 1982, Ken surrendered his life to Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord.
He grew up in a Christian home, the 3rd of 3 boys. As a child, he accepted the faith of his parents and always believed in God, but never made his faith his own. During a difficult adolescent, Ken became what is now known as “a poser,” appearing to be someone he wasn’t. Eventually he walked away from the church…and God. On the outside all seemed good but on the inside he felt angry, alone and without purpose. To numb the emptiness, he turned to alcohol, work, parties, sex and success. When it all caught up to him, he was a broken young man. The morning after Ken surrendered his life, two things were forever different. He felt unconditional love and he knew his life had a purpose.
In a much longer story, he and Bonnie got back together (they’d “dated from age 14 -16) and were married a year later. They quickly became youth leaders in their local church and Ken began to teach a youth Bible Study in their home. They witnessed saw the power of God’s word and a little love change people’s lives. A few years later, with one child, they sold everything, packed up and went to Bible College. In 1991, with three children, a student loan and a vision to make an eternal difference, they moved to British Columbia, Canada to begin pastoral ministry. Ken has served as a youth pastor, church planter, Senior Pastor and Executive Pastor in a larger church.
It was during a season of significant church growth, FS was birthed. There were ~40 people on a waiting list for prayer ministry or pastoral counseling and one of Ken’s assignments was to find a way to minister healing to people en masse. They tried a number of Christian recovery ministries but none went deep enough for the issues people were seeking help for. Originally, FS was only used in their local church but when other churches began asking for their materials, they realized they needed to write the workbooks and film the teaching. They first published FS in 2005 and then again in 2009.
On November 29, 2009 pastor ken was returning from meeting with and sharing the FS vision with pastors and leaders in Toronto ON (Canada) when he sensed God speaking directly to him. It was this message that God used to lead Ken and Bonnie to spend the next five years equipping the church to more effectively minister to hurting people.
“It is no longer acceptable for My church to lead people to Christ through the church and then refer them to outside counseling or secular healing programs for healing, after which you disciple them. If you were ministering in a third world country, your message would have to include food, water and the basics of hygiene,…but you’re not. You are ministering in North America where one of My people’s greatest needs is for emotional [and relational] healing.”
For years the church has led people to faith in Christ and tried to disciple them with methods designed for relationally healthy people. This works for some but many of the people attracted to Christ today have significant pain in their lives and unhealthy ways of coping with it. And we’ve attempted to counsel most of the people suffering from the trauma or growing up in abusive environments, those struggling with pornography, food additions/eating disorders, alcohol/drugs, the buried shame of an abortion and those walking through separation / divorce.
God has used FS to set thousands of people like this free from these kinds of issues.
But God has also used FS to heal and free thousands of long-time church people, those without identifiable addictions, young adults preparing for marriage. Some churches have taken their entire staff/leadership through the program.
With the encouragement of others and the investment of many friends of FS, Ken began re-writing and re-branding FS in 2014. With Bonnie’s help in editing and arranging testimonies, they filmed the entire series in summer of 2015 and released a brand new FS edition in June 2016.
On a personal note, Ken and Bonnie have three adult children, two daughters in love and have recently entered into grandparenting…and loving it. Ken & Bonnie also enjoy traveling together, ocean front breakfasts and serving the Lord. Ken enjoys snowboarding, fishing and motorcycles. This fall, he will also take up hunting to spend more time with his boys.
In addition to teaching the various training seminars offered by Freedom Session International, pastor Ken is a sought after speaker for weekend church services, men’s retreats/events, pastor’s and leadership retreats and group conflict mediation.
